Understanding Mandated Benefits: Federal and State Compliance in Ohio

Introduction

Total rewards benefit packages are offered by companies for a variety of reasons, with the primary goal of recruiting and retaining top talent. In addition to offering voluntary benefits, companies must also comply with federal and state laws that dictate benefits not related to wages. At the federal level, two of the most critical mandated benefits are the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (Group, 2021). The FMLA requires employers to provide eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in 12 months for certain family and medical reasons (Group, 2021). The FLSA requires employers to pay their employees a minimum wage, overtime pay, and time off to vote.

In the state of Ohio, employers must comply with a variety of mandated benefits. One of the most important benefits is the Ohio Fair Labor Standards Act, which requires employers to provide eligible employees with a minimum wage of $8.70 per hour (Scarselli & Steinglass, 2022). Employers must also provide employees with the right to receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in 12 months and the right to receive compensation for time off to vote (Scarselli & Steinglass, 2022). In Ohio, employers must give workers’ compensation insurance to their employees if they are injured or become ill while working.

Conclusion

Overall, employers must comply with both federal and state laws when it comes to providing certain benefits and rewards to their employees. In addition to offering voluntary benefits, employers must also comply with mandated benefits such as the FMLA, FLSA, and the Ohio Fair Labor Standards Act. By following these laws, employers can help ensure their employees are provided with the necessary benefits and rewards that they are legally entitled to.
