Based on the readings, it is evident that the development of technology has played a critical role in not only complicating the execution of crimes but also in resolving crime mysteries. After undertaking the module, one thing that stood out is that technology has provided mechanisms that have made it easy to uncover the various ways crimes are executed. Advancements in technology have enabled sufficient information to probe criminal activities, which was challenging in the past. The future of criminology becomes brighter as investigators can develop mechanisms to solve past crime mysteries through modern technologies.
Among the things that promise a brighter future in criminology is the ability of crime investigators to use technology to understand the various gimmicks that criminals use to undertake their activities. An example is the aspect of criminal gangs developing their networks to communicate with other gang members and plan their activities (Salcedo-Albarán, 2017). The use of technology has enabled investigators to uncover and untangle the translational criminal networks that exist. Furthermore, scientific research has enabled investigators to uncover how criminals like the Narcos in Mexico have used technology, including 3D technologies, in crime (Goodman, 2012, TEDx Talks, 2016). This information shows a bright future in criminology and how investigators use intelligence to envision criminals’ use of technology. Such information is used to provide solutions to prevent the development of a criminal utopia.
The brighter future of criminology is also evident in the technologies that enable the investigation of crime scenes. Crime scene investigators argue that techniques such as forensic anthropological examination and forensic autopsy have had numerous limitations in providing accurate information on victims of crime (Develter & Bekaert, 2016). Modern technology has enabled the development of techniques such as CT databases, 3D facial morphologies, and forensic genetics to gather accurate data on bullet trajectories, victim identification, and crime execution times (Potter, 2015). These aspects show how technology plays a critical role in enhancing the study of crimes.
