Legal Protections for E-Commerce

Introduction

E-commerce is a large segment of the economy in which payment for services or goods is made online. These transactions are carried out using computer systems, but sometimes it is not entirely safe. To prevent various types of dangers for consumers on the Internet, the United States has developed several laws that are aimed at protecting consumers and providers. These laws include the Federal Trade Commission Act, the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act, and the General Data Protection Regulation.

Discussion

The law on the Federal Trade Commission is aimed at eliminating unfair methods of competition, as well as unjust actions that have a negative impact on trade. The Federal Trade Commission does not seek to determine the list of information that is required to be included in the privacy policy of the sites (Rustad, 2015). Nevertheless, the commission uses its rights to ensure the security of consumer privacy. The Federal Trade Commission is dealing with statements that mislead leading development companies. In addition, the commission monitors organizations that do not comply with the rules for the transfer of personal information of consumers and do not provide the necessary measures to ensure the security of customer data.

The purpose of the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act is to address the issue of protecting the confidential data of California residents. This law expanded measures to protect confidential information and allowed customers to refuse data processing. In addition, the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act allowed consumers to correct erroneous personal data, as well as receive their data from companies upon request (Edelbach & Winston, 2013). However, in accordance with this law, consumers do not have the right to file lawsuits against companies from which personal information was leaked.

The General Data Protection Regulation was distributed in 2018 and became the legal framework that established the rules for the collection of personal information. Consumers must confirm their consent to the collection of information through cookies. These small files collect information about what the consumer is looking for on a particular site. According to the General Data Protection Regulation, consumers can request corrections of errors in their data and have the right to make inquiries about what information was collected and how it was used (Lianos & Botwright, 2019). In addition, consumers can request the deletion of their data based on this regulation. An essential element is that in case of hacking, the site is obliged to notify users about it.

Technological and legal solutions that will be aimed at improving the conduct of business via the Internet may include enhancing international cooperation to increase trust in online commerce. Moreover, the creation of special rules will protect the personal information of consumers (Edelbach & Winston, 2013). It is essential to develop convenient programs for customers and suppliers that simplify logistics, payments and other business elements. This is necessary to increase trust in the online sphere in the international business field. Online consumer protection rules will help in creating a base for safe online shopping.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many US laws to regulate the use of the Internet for commercial purposes. Each of them is designed to protect consumers and providers from the leakage of personal data, as well as to prevent the illegal dissemination of personal data. The Federal Trade Commission aims to eliminate unfair competition, and the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act helps protect consumers’ data. The General Data Protection Regulation aims to collect and store data from sites that consumers have used. Due to such solutions as creating special rules for using online resources and increasing international cooperation, users may have an opportunity to work with various sites while keeping their personal information safe.
