Arguments For Treating Gig Workers as Employees

Proponents of granting employee status to gig workers contend that such individuals should be endowed with the same rights and allowances as their conventional counterparts. This would entitle them to legal entitlements like the minimum wage, time-and-a-half pay, workers’ restitution, unemployment insurance, and admittance to healthcare plans and retirement funds. Supporters claim that gig workers are habitually exposed to the same perils and tribulations as those of traditional employees and thus deserve similar safeguards.

Arguments Against Considering Gig Workers as Employees

Conversely, opponents of labeling gig workers as employees contend that doing so could hamper the versatility and potentially have an adverse effect on the gig economy. Uber and Lyft have asserted that their systems are contingent upon the suppleness of the gig labor, allowing those engaged in it to maintain autonomy with regard to their hours and job functions. If gig workers were to be labeled as employees, this could result in a decrease in suppleness and an elevation in operational costs for these firms, potentially necessitating the alteration of their business models or even causing layoffs. Additionally, critics have argued that gig workers make a conscious decision to engage in such an occupation due to the freedom it provides and may not be inclined to accept the obligations and restrictions that are associated with traditional employment.

Personal Perspective and Government’s Role in Addressing the Issue

In my estimation, the government should adopt a judicious approach to the matter. Although I assert that gig workers ought to be endowed with the same fundamental rights and advantages as other kinds of employees, I also hold that companies such as Uber and Lyft should be able to stay competitive and progressive. To attain this equilibrium may necessitate a fusion of methods, such as bestowing gig workers with some benefits and allowing companies to form their business plans in a manner that is beneficial for both workers and customers. In any event, the government should take action to guarantee that gig workers have access to basic rights and advantages while concurrently enabling companies to remain competitive.
